Mushrooms that light up Spanish forests: a natural spectacle revealing the ecological importance of the fungi kingdom

In various humid corners of the Iberian Peninsula, a surprising phenomenon occurs: fungi capable of emitting their own light in complete darkness. On moonless nights, this faint glow transforms the forest into an almost unreal scene.

The fungal bioluminescence, although more frequent in tropical areas, also occurs in Spain. Its appearance depends on humidity, the presence of decaying wood, and total darkness.

A cold light born from a natural chemical reaction

The bioluminescence occurs when two internal compounds, luciferin and luciferase, react in the presence of oxygen. This interaction generates a greenish, soft, and continuous light without emitting heat.

Although its ecological function is still being investigated, the most accepted theory suggests that this light can attract insects that help disperse the spores. It could also act as a defense mechanism against nocturnal predators.

Unlike fluorescence, which depends on an external light source, bioluminescence originates autonomously. That’s why fungi glow even in absolute darkness.

Species that illuminate the night in Iberian forests

Spain hosts several species linked to this phenomenon. Some produce visible glow, while others generate it only in their subterranean mycelium.

Mycena is one of the most representative genera, present in humid areas of the north and mountainous areas of the country’s center. Several of its species show light in fruiting bodies or internal tissues.

Another notable species is Armillaria mellea, common in Galicia and Catalonia. Its mycelium can emit a faint glow, noticeable only under extreme humidity and total darkness conditions.

Omphalotus olearius also appears, known as the olive mushroom, noticeable for a slight glow in its gills. Although toxic, it contributes to the mysterious aura of the Mediterranean forests.

The fungal glow is not easy to observe. It requires moderate temperatures, high humidity, and the presence of decaying wood. When these factors coincide, the night forest reveals lights that seem straight out of a fairy tale.

The bioluminescent fungus and its environmental benefits

Among the benefits of the bioluminescent fungus is the natural recycling of biomass, as by degrading decaying wood, they drive the nutrient cycle and strengthen soil fertility.

Additionally, they function as indicators of healthy ecosystems, since their presence is often associated with humid, diverse, and minimally altered forests, thus acting as ecological thermometers of a habitat’s health.

Finally, the underground connections that sustain life form networks that facilitate chemical communication between plants and help maintain the stability of forest ecosystems.
