The Government of Argentina eliminated tariffs on the import of electric and hybrid vehicles. This concerns the National Registry of Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, established in 2023 by the previous administration.
This measure aims to deregulate the electric mobility sector. In addition, a quota of 50,000 hybrid and electric vehicles that can be imported from countries outside the free trade zone without paying the current 35% tariff will be established.
Among the justifications for the elimination of the mentioned Registry, it is mentioned that “it had become a cumbersome procedure, with no clear objective, and only generated more administrative burden for companies and citizens.”
Instead of promoting the expansion of electromobility, as alleged at its implementation, it had caused delays and additional costs. With this measure, the Government expects the installation of charging points to speed up and favor the growth of the electric vehicle market.
**Argentina eliminates tariffs for electric and hybrid vehicles**
In parallel, the Government has announced a measure to incentivize the import of hybrid and electric vehicles. A 0% tariff has been established for those models with a Free On Board (FOB) value of up to $16,000, provided they come from countries outside Mercosur and other trade agreements.
Until now, these vehicles were subject to a 35% tariff, limiting their access to the local market. With this measure, it aims to boost electric mobility and open a new segment of more affordable cars in Argentina.
The initiative has a maximum quota of 50,000 units annually that can benefit from this measure; last year, 555 electric vehicles were patented in the country.
There are a series of conditions to qualify for this initiative: the verification of the FOB value by the Government, compliance with safety regulations, and the exclusion of vehicles from Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay, which already have automotive free trade agreements with Argentina.
