Using more hemp to use less oil and protect the planet

Currently, it is almost unimaginable to conceive progress without the use of petroleum-derived materials. However, there was a time when they were neither used nor essential. Nowadays, this industry is recognized as one of the main sources of global pollution. Is there, then, an option that allows us to take care of the planet? Of course, and the answer lies in the versatility of the hemp plant.

Thanks to its historical connection with this plant species, Argentina has maintained a cultural heritage that has spanned generations and decades, revitalizing the importance of products made from hemp. Currently, we are talking about economic and ecological projects that promote sustainability.

Innovation and Challenges: Hemp in the Textile Industry and Beyond

According to academic texts and archaeological findings, hemp has always been valued as an industrial plant due to the extraordinary quality of its fibers. Following that tradition, Argentine companies like Palo Azul, originating in the estuary of Bahía Blanca, stand out in the creation of products such as footwear using natural dyes, botanical prints, and biomaterials.

From the brand, they explain that they have started working with hemp, a completely natural fiber that integrates efficiently with ecological dyes, improving definition and absorption in footwear.

This material allowed the development of a line of 100% vegan and sustainable sneakers, combined with recycled rubber soles. However, they point out that the biggest challenge lies in the carbon footprint and the limited availability of hemp, which is currently imported from India. They indicate that it would be ideal to promote its local production.

In addition to footwear, hemp has the potential to replace synthetic fibers such as nylon in the production of clothing and other textile products.

Caring for the Planet with Innovative Products: Bioplastics and More

Another prominent project is ioop!, a brand that uses hemp biomass to manufacture eyeglass frames, representing a revolutionary alternative to conventional plastics. From the company, they explain that the hemp value chain starts with its sustainable cultivation, taking advantage of its natural resistance and low resource consumption. The fibers are transformed into high-quality textiles, the seeds into oils or nutritious foods, and the waste into bioplastics and construction materials.

However, they also face challenges, such as the slowness of national organizations and economic instability. They emphasize that it is urgent to reform financing models so that banking institutions support innovative and sustainable projects like theirs.

Hemp, due to its renewable and efficient characteristics, represents a key solution to non-renewable and polluting resources. It is crucial to establish policies that support these types of ventures to ensure a greener and more sustainable future.
