While prehistoric species became extinct millions of years ago, it is still surprising that unprecedented discoveries continue to emerge today. Therefore, a new species of prehistoric bird was discovered in Colombia.

The group of Ecobio researchers from the Santiago de Cali University, led by the biology paleontologist professor Jonathan Pelegrín Ramírez, found fossil remains of an impressive creature in the Tatacoa Desert.

Prehistoric bird discovered in Colombia: what it was like

This prehistoric bird would be classified within the Phorusrhacidae family, commonly known as “terror birds”.

They terrorized the South American fauna for millions of years during the Cenozoic, the Pliocene-Pleistocene of North America, and the Eocene of Africa, according to National Geographic.

According to the researchers, the animal could have had an estimated height of 2.5 meters and a weight of 156 kilograms. It would be the largest recorded to date, which could have rivaled in size and ferocity with dominant predators.

Where did this prehistoric bird live

“This discovery expands our knowledge about the geographical distribution of this group of birds and reinforces the idea that terror birds of the Phorusrhacinae subfamily were widely spread throughout South America, from Argentina to Colombia,” stated Pelegrín.
The analysis was conducted thanks to the collaboration between the renowned Argentine paleontologist specialized in birds of this species, Federico Degrange, the researcher from Johns Hopkins University, Siobhan Brighid Cooke, and the scientists from the University of Los Andes, Andrés Link and Luis Gonzalo Ortiz.
The team created a 3D model of the remains and discovered that it had a part similar to the human tibia. Additionally, it had bite marks from a more fearsome specimen, which would have ended its life: the Purussaurus.
