International Animal Rights Day: Why is it celebrated today?

Most read

On this Tuesday, December 10, the International Day of Animal Rights is commemorated. Since 1998, the aim is to raise awareness of the exploitation situation that species worldwide face.

The recognition and advocacy of animal rights have their own date on the global calendar. It also serves to promote animal welfare through different actions.

International Day of Animal Rights: Why It Is Commemorated Today

The Universal Declaration of Animal Rights was proclaimed in 1978 thanks to the International League for Animal Rights. It included a preamble and 14 articles that laid the groundwork for numerous legal texts on the protection of animals.

This commemoration is celebrated every year, driven by animal defense associations and by all those who support the principles on which this fight is based.

Why the day of animal rights is commemorated.
Why the day of animal rights is commemorated.

It coincides with the World Human Rights Day, and it is no coincidence. The unjust and hypocritical part is that rights are only recognized for one of the thousands of animal species in nature.

This day is commemorated with several objectives, which converge in the request for the declaration of their rights.

This day of coordinated global action seeks to recognize the rights of all sentient beings to life and freedom. The goal is to spark public debate on how animals are treated and to achieve international recognition of their fundamental rights not to be exploited.

Types of Animal Abuse

Various types of animal abuse are considered, such as:

  • Being raised and cruelly slaughtered for their meat, skin, and fur.
  • Being tormented and tortured in experimental laboratories for cruel and pointless experiments (except for medical purposes).
  • Being harassed and hunted in the name of the supposed sport of hunting.
  • Being exploited and deprived of freedom in circuses, aquariums, and zoos.
  • Being part of ‘entertainments’ such as bullfighting and all the barbaric customs they entail.
