Thanks to a report and an incriminating video, the provincial authorities rescued an abused howler monkey in Santa Cruz. They found it in poor health, as reported, and two people were arrested for illegal possession.

It happened in the town of Las Heras. On Tuesday, the images of the animal reached the hands of the Zoonosis authorities and led to a report to the Local Court of Offenses in the town.

After the report was filed, the corresponding search warrant was issued to search a home in the Las Américas neighborhood.

During the operation, carried out on Wednesday, the authorities found that the 40-year-old woman and the 43-year-old man had under their roof the animal named “Yeico“.

The specimen belongs to a species native to the jungle areas of South America and is protected by conservation laws.

Upon examining the monkey, about 6 or 7 years old, they noticed that it had less than half the size of an adult. In addition, it had one hand completely atrophied, as well as its legs.

The detained individuals, both of Paraguayan nationality, were questioned initially during the raid and claimed that the monkey had been fed correctly “with fruits, chicken, and noodles, which he loves”. However, they did not have a health booklet.

Yeico’s sad story: where will the rescued monkey go

Yeico, with black fur, in the images that were circulated was in the arms of the detained woman, who was smoking while answering questions.

After the rescue, the municipal Zoonosis took charge of its care. The team, specialized in animal handling, is taking care of it while evaluating its transfer to a habitat suitable for its natural needs.

This Saturday, María Alejandra Juárez, director of the Carayá Project of Córdoba, confirmed that they will receive the howler monkey. “He has to adapt and will be in contact with his species,” she said.

“The Secretary of the Prosecutor’s Office called us and asked if we could receive him. We said yes, to get in touch with the authorities of Córdoba because it is an interprovincial transfer,” she detailed to the local media.

“Yeico is in pretty bad shape, which doesn’t mean he was mistreated,” the woman clarified about the monkey’s health.

“He won’t have a normal life ever due to the damage. Mostly because of the lack of proper nutrition. He will be in an enclosure, but I can’t guarantee he will be free,” she added.
