In a meeting of the Honorary Advisory Commission for Wildlife of La Pampa, it was defined that hunting with packs of dogs will continue to be allowed in the province. This is a highly criticized practice, which is even prohibited in many districts of the country.

Animal protection associations and civil society in general argue that it is a cruel form of mistreatment.

The issue had also sparked controversy months ago, when La Pampa authorized the participation of minors in these hunting trips.

On Monday, a new meeting of the Honorary Advisory Commission for Wildlife, led by the Undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs, Ricardo Baraldi, was held.

Also present were the Director of Natural Resources, Carlos Bonnemezón, and the Deputy Director of Wildlife, Federico Pelizzari.

In addition to a review of activities carried out during 2024, it was announced that work will continue with the hunting with packs of dogs, with a management system for dog registration and user categorization.

The same will apply to the sport hunting activity in general, with the advancement of digitization of registrations and other related procedures.

“It is important for these meetings to continue so that we can analyze the proposals you may have, which involve different actors, each with their own interests,” Baraldi pointed out.

The purpose of the meeting was to review the activities carried out during the year 2024 by the General Directorate of Natural Resources. It was also to outline actions for the year 2025 in a coordinated manner with the various actors involved in this activity within the province of La Pampa.

The controversial hunting with packs of dogs

Hunting with packs of dogs is prohibited in several localities in the country, such as in Córdoba or San Luis.

The practice, which involves a group of specially trained dogs hunting down “prey” animals, is highly controversial.

“It not only poses a serious threat to wildlife, such as wild boars and deer, but also exposes hunting dogs to extreme situations of mistreatment and abandonment,” argue from the organization Vida Animal.

The most recent controversy related to the topic erupted in February, also in La Pampa, when the Department of Natural Resources allowed the participation of children in hunting with packs of dogs.

Animal protection groups warned of possible acts of cruelty and violation of children’s rights.
