Over the weekend, a very unusual wildlife sighting surprised in Chubut. They spotted a female huemul in Lago Puelo and the image touched the locals, as she was with her calf.
Both specimens of this species of native deer, considered the southernmost in the world, were seen in the surroundings of the alternative route at the foot of Mount Currumahuida.
These animals, due to their habits, are very difficult to detect. However, in this case, there was even time to take a photo of them, which went viral on social media.

In the last hours, as reported by local media, residents of the area had an encounter with a female huemul, who was accompanied by her calf.
And there was even time for someone to take a photo of the mother with a cellphone, to document the sighting, which has already made headlines.
Earlier, in August, a resident of the area between Lago Puelo and El Bolsón had already been surprised at very close range with a pudú; another native deer species, also threatened. That time, the animal had dared to enter none other than a house’s garden.
In both that sighting and this case, from Lago Puelo National Park, a call was made to the population regarding the preservation of two species that are symbols of Patagonia.
“It is reminded that the huemul is an endangered species and its hunting or harassment is prohibited,” authorities stated in a press release.
Additionally, a request was made. “If you spot them, leave us a message or contact us at 2944-204901 ext. 103 or through our social media,” they informed.
They reported that this was the course of action followed in August by the resident of Entre RÃos area who encountered the pudú. Sightings of this type of wildlife are valuable because they are crucial to try to establish their habits, movements, and situation in the territory, which is not easy due to their solitary habits.
