Deforestation, climate change, and human action have caused several species to be displaced from their natural habitat, which is why many animals have stopped being seen. This is what happened with the pumas that were seen again in the National Park of Puerto Gaboto after a long time.
These felines are one of the largest mammals that inhabit the entire country, except for Tierra del Fuego. This time, the puma concolor was seen in the province of Santa Fe thanks to the trap cameras installed in the natural area, a fact that highlights the importance of maintaining conservation sites.
Its appearance is more than enough evidence for it to be added to the list of mammals in protected areas. Although there are very few records of the presence of these pumas in the Delta and Paraná Islands ecoregion, the truth is that it is a predator that can affect the population structure of its prey.
On the other hand, researchers ensure that its presence in the National Park of Puerto Gaboto can cause changes in the biodiversity patterns of the region.
What to do in the presence of pumas?
Pumas are one of the largest mammals in the region, so they can be dangerous if they feel threatened. For this reason, experts recommend considering the following advice:
- Do not approach the animal, stay calm, look at the puma, and raise your arms to appear as large as possible.
- Always give the puma a chance to leave. To do this, you must step back slowly and make sure to provide it with an escape route.
- Do not run away, crouch, or squat down.
- Be vocal. Speak calmly and regularly.
