Goldwind Argentina signed a commercial agreement on December 23, 2024, with TotalEnergies to supply GW136 4.2MW wind turbines for the Río Cullen project in Tierra del Fuego. Once operational, it will be the southernmost wind farm in the world, with the exception of some facilities in Antarctica.
A challenge in extreme conditions
“TotalEnergies is one of the major players in the global market, and it is a pride for Goldwind Argentina to have signed the first agreement to carry out a project in Argentina,” highlighted Fernando Errea, Sales Manager of Goldwind Argentina.
“This is a major challenge due to the project’s location conditions, as Tierra del Fuego is known for its excellent wind resource. We know that our turbines are ready for the most severe weather conditions, ensuring excellent performance,” he added about the new wind farm in the world’s southernmost region.
Logistics and project sustainability
The wind turbines from China will arrive in the second quarter of this year at the port of Punta Arenas in Chile. From there, they will be transported by ferry and land to the wind farm location.
Currently, these facilities generate their own electricity using gas turbines. This innovative project, based on renewable energy, will help reduce the carbon footprint of the activities. It will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 60%.
A pioneering project in the decarbonization strategy
This hybrid project, which combines renewable energy and batteries, will become the first onshore development of its kind within TotalEnergies’ Exploration-Production branch worldwide.
The initiative is part of the decarbonization strategy that TotalEnergies has been implementing since 2019, aiming to reduce emissions from its industrial facilities by more than 40% by 2030.
Development of renewable energies in Argentina
In line with its global policy, TotalEnergies has also promoted the development of renewable energies in the country, with four generation facilities in its portfolio:
- A 30 MW photovoltaic solar plant located in San Luis, named Caldenes del Oeste
- Two wind farms: Mario Cebreiro in Buenos Aires, with 100 MW, and Vientos Los Hércules in Santa Cruz, with 97.2 MW
- The 50 MW Malaspina wind farm in Chubut
