The Faculty of Philosophy, Humanities and Arts of San Juan has installed solar panels on the terrace of its headquarters located at the intersection of Ignacio de la Roza and Sarmiento streets.

In this way, it has become the first building in downtown San Juan to have solar energy available.

Solar energy project at the Faculty

“These are 700-watt solar panels. In total, it is a 50-kilowatt system and we are going to install 72 panels to maximize it. This first stage is the one we are concluding and we plan the second one to see if we build a roof or in the other sector of the terrace a similar structure, so we complete the 72 panels,” commented the company that worked during January on the installation of the solar panels.

So far, they have installed 36 panels. The plan is to relieve the roofs, that is, half of one side of the terrace and on the other half, the remaining 36.

The technicians explained that they work with a “battery backup” system that, in case of a general power cut, “restores power in seconds, but they are two different units; one unit is hybrid and the other unit is the battery backup; one that injects and the other that serves as a backup,” stated Diego Carrizo, one of the workers.

Innovation in public infrastructure

“This is the first public building here in San Juan downtown to have solar energy. We have assembled the entire structure preserving the columns. And we are working on advancing with the second part. We are discussing the matter with the engineers to assess the driving forces we have to adapt the planned roof. If not, we will continue with the other part of the terrace,” Carrizo explained.
