Wind turbines, the latest in renewable energy: how do they work

Most read

Among the multiple benefits of renewable energies, there is also self-consumption or energy independence, both for its zero emissions to the atmosphere, as well as for the reduction of electricity costs in the medium term. For this, many people have opted for different energy collection systems, including solar panels and hydrogen. However, the real novelty lies in wind turbines.

Indeed, these turbines represent a good domestic option for the creation of wind energy. While it was unthinkable to have technology with blades that could be included in the home, the company Hattrick Techologies achieved an integrated solution for homes or businesses without the need to install huge windmills.

Up to now, this type of energy was only viable in places with large land extensions to generate electricity on a large scale, due to the size of the wind turbines that are usually seen on the side of the road. However, this company designed a modular turbine system in a hexagonal shape, which when combined with others simulates a panel of bees.

In addition to not generating emissions, energy-generating turbines also do not cause visual or noise pollution, as one of the characteristics of these devices is their silent operating capacity.

How do wind turbines work?

These turbines, unlike traditional ones, have the ability to take advantage of softer winds through oscillating aerodynamic profiles in the form of blades rather than traditional blades. This format allows the entry of winds that generate an acceleration of the blades that help accelerate the air entering the turbine by 1.5 times.

In fact, the turbine tested by the University of Strathclyde exceeded the expectations of its creators, achieving an average of 41.1 W of mechanical power at a wind speed of only 10.2 m/s, when it was only expected to achieve between 25 and 40 W at 12 m/s. In addition, the efficiency recorded in the evaluation reached 6.85%. This led the company to confirm that its wind turbine system can produce 50% more energy than that provided by solar energy.

Recognition for the invention

The company that designed these turbines was awarded for its sustainable innovation with the environment with the Start Up award at the Barclay’s Entrepreneur Awards, and the Energy Innovation Award at the National Sustainability Awards 2023.

These mini wind turbines have a flexible and environmentally friendly format. In addition, their hexagonal structure allows for the arrangement and addition of as many turbines as necessary to meet the energy demand.
