Alarm over air pollution in Asia
Atmospheric pollution or air pollution in Asia has reached critical levels, especially in countries like **[India, China, and Pakistan](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/la-contaminacion-en-el-aire-causa-7-millones-de-muerte-por-ano/)**.
There, the **[air quality is among the worst](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/la-contaminacion-en-el-aire-causa-7-millones-de-muerte-por-ano/)** in the world. The presence of polluting gases such as **CO2**, fine particles known as **PM2.5**, and other harmful pollutants like **sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide** contribute to contracting diseases.
These are **respiratory and cardiovascular conditions**, responsible for a high percentage of deaths in children.
Children in Danger: What the UNICEF report says
The recent analysis by UNICEF, published in February, reveals that **[more than 100 daily deaths of children under five years old](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/la-contaminacion-en-el-aire-causa-7-millones-de-muerte-por-ano/)** are related to **atmospheric pollution** in East Asia and the Pacific.
The capital of **[Thailand, Bangkok](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/la-contaminacion-en-el-aire-causa-7-millones-de-muerte-por-ano/)**, faces unhealthy levels of atmospheric pollution, leading to school closures and widespread **health concerns**.
The analysis sheds light on the **devastating impact of toxic air** on the region’s children and urges immediate action to protect their health and future.
It is worth noting that this population is **particularly vulnerable to the [effects of air pollution](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/cancer-de-pulmon-el-aumento-de-casos-se-debe-en-parte-a-la-contaminacion-del-aire/)**, as their respiratory systems and immune defenses are still developing.
Fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and affect the **brain**, increasing the risk of chronic conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and lung growth problems.
Furthermore, prolonged exposure to pollution has been linked to neurological disorders and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood.
The analysis also reveals that all children in East Asia and the Pacific, **[500 million in total, live in countries with unhealthy levels of atmospheric pollution](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/la-contaminacion-en-el-aire-causa-7-millones-de-muerte-por-ano/)**.
Moreover, 91% of these minors live in countries where ozone pollution exceeds levels recommended by the **[World Health Organization (WHO)](https://noticiasambientales.com/ciencia/la-oms-proporciona-pautas-para-prevenir-la-contaminacion-de-los-rios-por-residuos-de-antibioticos/)**.
Consequences beyond health
The effects of air pollution are not limited to children’s health. It also results in **overburdening already overwhelmed healthcare systems**, increases costs, and disrupts learning and productivity.
Other consequences include **school absenteeism due to illness, difficulties in brain development**, and the risk of school closures.
Additionally, the **economic repercussions are of significant impact**. The **[World Bank](https://www.worldbank.org/)** estimated that in 2019, air pollution caused **premature deaths and illnesses** that cost East Asia and the Pacific region **9.3% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP)**, equivalent to over 2.5 trillion dollars.
