Although Colombia is not among the largest CO2 emitters, the country faces the ambitious goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030.
This goal will only be achievable through joint efforts between the government, civil society, and notably, companies. So far, key measures have been implemented such as the promotion of renewable energies, reforestation, clean mobility, and the regulation of polluting industrial activities.
“Companies play a fundamental role in reducing CO2 through their capacity for innovation, adoption of sustainable technologies, and optimization of processes that positively impact the environment. We at Familia Institucional, now Tork® as part of the hygiene industry, develop strategies such as the recovery of dispensers to promote the circular economy and the use of PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) material for our packaging, among others, to reaffirm our commitment to the environment,” says Paulina Barragán, Communications Manager of Familia Institucional, now Tork® LATAM.
## Energy Sector and Climate Goals of Colombia
According to the latest Ideam report, the energy sector leads greenhouse gas emissions in Colombia (30%), followed by agriculture (19.57%), waste (6.08%), and industrial processes (2.91%). Globally, an InfluenceMap study highlights that only 57 companies generate 80% of CO2 emissions, reinforcing the need for large industries to adopt sustainable practices as a strategic axis.
The UN has stated that limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires significant reductions in CO2 emissions by 2030. In this context, companies play a key role in leading with innovation, implementing sustainable models, and reducing their environmental footprint. These actions not only mitigate climate change but also strengthen the values and responsibility of companies towards their audiences and communities.
## Commitment and Tangible Results
Tork® has established itself as a reference brand in sustainability, implementing tangible initiatives in Colombia and globally. At the Medellín plant, the company managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by over 58% between 2016 and 2024, surpassing the global target of 35% by 2030. Additionally, it has reduced its water consumption by 40% over the last ten years, with the goal of reaching 60% in the next three years.
“Our commitment to sustainability is tangible. We have exceeded global targets thanks to key technological innovations and initiatives that promote the circular economy,” says Barragán.
On a global scale, Tork® has driven pioneering innovations. In Australia, it developed the world’s only plant using geothermal energy, achieving a 46% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In the United States, the brand introduced dispensers with carbon-neutral certification, becoming the first professional hygiene brand in North America to achieve this milestone.
A Nielsen study confirms that 66% of consumers are willing to pay more for products from companies committed to the environment. This data reflects how sustainable practices not only help mitigate the climate crisis but also reinforce the connection of brands with their audiences.
## Colombia and a Collective Commitment
By 2023, global CO2 emissions reached a historic record, highlighting the need for stronger policies and a collective commitment.
Large industries have the potential and responsibility to lead by example, adopting sustainable practices to ensure a livable future for the next generations.
