The province of Chubut has taken an important step in marine conservation by approving the expansion of the Punta Marqués Natural Protected Area (ANP).

With this measure, sanctioned by the provincial Legislature on May 22nd, the protected territory increases by 245%, from 1,282 to 3,815 hectares, reinforcing the region’s leadership in preserving marine and coastal biodiversity.

The initiative, driven by Governor Ignacio “Nacho” Torres, is based on studies carried out within the reserve’s Management Plan, which identified key areas for the protection of vulnerable species and connectivity with other protected areas along the Patagonian coast.

A refuge for fauna and natural heritage

The expansion aims to ensure the preservation of fundamental habitats for various species, including:

  • Sea lions, iconic inhabitants of the coast.
  • Sei whales and other cetaceans, which transit these waters during their migratory cycle.
  • Coastal and marine birds, many of which are vulnerable.

In addition to biodiversity, the project protects natural landscapes and archaeological sites, crucial for the cultural heritage of the region.

Responsible tourism and sustainable development

The plan includes the management of tourism and recreational activities, promoting sustainable use of the area.

This will help consolidate Chubut as an ecotourism destination, respecting the values of conservation and environmental education.

International commitment to biodiversity

The expansion of the ANP Punta Marqués aligns with global commitments, such as the 30×30 target of the Global Biodiversity Framework, which proposes protecting 30% of natural ecosystems by 2030.

This advancement strengthens Chubut’s role in marine conservation, contributing to a balance between environmental protection and sustainable development in the Golfo San Jorge.
