COP29: The urgency of avoiding the emission of 4.000 million tons of CO2

Most read

At COP29, one of the most urgent issues is the need to remove at least 4000 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere to combat climate change.

This task requires significant funding, especially to support less developed countries in their adaptation and mitigation plans.

COP29 Expectations

María Fernanda Espinoza, former President of the General Assembly and member of the International Commission of Advisers for COP29, expects the conference to establish a new Fair and Ambitious Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) to finance the ecological and energy transition necessary to reduce CO2 emissions and adapt to climate change.

Funding and Support for Vulnerable Countries

A new figure of climate financing that meets the needs of developing countries is needed.

This includes supporting small island states and less developed countries in developing their national adaptation plans and nationally determined contributions.

Key Issues to Address

  1. Global Adaptation Goals: Advance on the path to emission reduction and enhance adaptive capacity, especially in developing countries.
  2. Article Six on Carbon Markets: Reach an agreement on this long-pending article.
  3. Loss and Damage Fund: Make a decision to operationalize the fund, provide it with resources, and ensure its functioning for cases of climate shocks.
  4. Gender and Climate Action Plan: Make a decision on this program, crucial for the women and gender agenda.

COP30 in Brazil

COP30 will take place in Belém do Pará, in the heart of the Amazon. This conference will focus on Amazon conservation and will have massive participation of indigenous peoples.

COP30 is expected to be successful, as long as the objectives of COP29 are met and an agreement on climate financing for the next ten years is reached.

Urgency of Climate Action

COP29 is a crucial summit, especially in the context of recent extreme climatic events, such as the DANA that devastated Valencia.

It is vital to learn lessons and take decisive actions to prevent future climate catastrophes.
