A serious accusation surrounds Entre Ríos these days. An organization denounced the clearing of gallery forest, allegedly for the construction of a campground.

The environmental organization CEYDAS (Center for the Study and Defense of Wild Birds) indicated, through a statement, that trees were cut down near “La Tortuga,” in an area managed by CODESAL (Corporation for the Development of Salto Grande).

“Several native trees from the forest were cut down, some over 80 years old. The campground belongs to the Food Industry Workers Union (STIA) and is located in an area managed by CODESAL near Tortuga Alegre,” they stated in the document sent to El Entre Ríos.

“Hundreds of native trees and shrubs recently cut with chainsaw or uprooted giving rise to wide clearings in the gallery forest of the Uruguay River,” they described the situation.

“It is the very sad sight that the so-called Fishing camping shows today,” they added.

Among the felled specimens, they listed: “Red Guavas, Coronillos, Ubajay, Canelones, Palos Cruz, White Guavas, Yellow Sticks, Bugre Herbs, Black Sarandíes, Chalchales, and Thorny Trees,” as just “some” examples.

They also claimed that there are specimens “over 80 years old with trunks over 50 centimeters in diameter.” As described in the accusation, many of the trunks were stacked for use as firewood.

“The most outrageous thing about this controversial clearing is that the CODESAL logo is displayed on the entrance signage to the campground, an entity that manages the tourist area of Salto Grande,” they concluded.

Clearings: alert in Argentina

The case in Entre Ríos is not isolated nor the only recent one in the country regarding illegal clearings. A few days ago, a complaint was made by the provincial Justice in Chaco against an important businessman.

They requested the detention of the forestry businessman Alessio Roberto Nardelli. It was for violating a precautionary measure that prohibited him from proceeding with the activity. According to the prosecutor, this occurred due to five acts of “judicial disobedience,” in which he carried out clearing activities without the proper authorization.

The request is based on five acts of judicial disobedience in which the businessman carried out clearing activities without the proper authorization, despite the prohibition in force since August 2024.

According to the Prosecutor’s report, the first incident occurred on February 21, when the National Gendarmerie found Nardelli carrying out clearing tasks on a property near Tres Isletas.

On that occasion, a bulldozer was confiscated and the illegality of the clearing was verified, as he did not have the necessary permits.
