Extreme winter in the United States: warnings issued for snowstorms and an arctic cold wave

One of the most visible consequences of global warming is the acceleration of climate change. In this sense, this season was marked by an extreme winter in the United States.

Just as heatwaves are common in countries experiencing summer, extreme weather events are also felt in winter.

Intense snowfalls and dangerously cold temperatures are expected in much of the North American country.

Extreme winter in the United States: warnings for 70 million people

Winter storm warnings issued by the National Weather Service have already taken effect for parts of the Mid-Atlantic, with a forecast projecting up to 15 centimeters (half a foot) of snow.

Warnings will begin in New England on Sunday afternoon, with parts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Connecticut expected to receive up to 25 centimeters of snow.

“There will certainly be some more dangerous road conditions from Washington D.C. along the entire I-95 corridor and then inland from there later today and tonight,” detailed Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

He projected that up to 70 million residents will be under some type of winter storm hazard warning in the coming days, including in New England and the Mid-Atlantic.

Major cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston could receive several centimeters of snow late with the highest totals outside the major cities.

Temperatures will be colder than usual

Much of the eastern half of the United States will endure some of the coldest temperatures of this winter, or even of several years.

An area from the Rocky Mountains to the northern plains will experience colder than normal temperatures starting Sunday through next week, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus 30 degrees F (minus 34 degrees Celsius) to minus 55 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 48 degrees Celsius) between Sunday and Monday.

Wind chills as low as minus 40 F (minus 40 degrees Celsius) have already been recorded in parts of North Dakota and Minnesota. Wind chills below zero are forecasted to reach as far as Oklahoma and the Tennessee Valley.

Moreover, the cold forecast for Monday in Washington, D.C. led to the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Donald Trump being moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda of the United States.

However, the colder temperatures will reach the southern United States early next week, where up to 30 million people could deal with a winter mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

Unusual conditions are expected to extend from Texas to northern Florida and the Carolinas. Impacts are also predicted to begin in Texas on Monday night and spread along the Gulf coast and Southeast on Tuesday and Wednesday.
