During the first **three months of 2025**, Brazil recorded **912,900 hectares burned**, representing a **70% reduction** compared to the same period in 2024, when 2.1 million hectares were affected by [wildfires](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/incendios-forestales-jovenes-por-bariloche-pide-colaboraciones-para-reforestar-areas-afectadas/).
According to the report by **Monitor do Fogo** from **MapBiomas**, 78% of the burned areas corresponded to **native vegetation**, while 43% were [**grasslands**](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/los-pastizales-urbanos-del-amba-un-ecosistema-fundamental-oculto-en-riesgo-por-la-falta-de-gestion/).
The **rainy season** helped decrease the fire outbreaks. However, the **Cerrado** showed the **largest burned area** compared to previous years, highlighting the urgency of specific prevention and combat strategies.
## Roraima, the most affected state
The state of **Roraima** led the fires with **415,700 hectares burned**, followed by Pará (208,600 hectares) and Maranhão (123,800 hectares), all part of the **Amazon biome**.
Researcher **Felipe Martenexen** from the **Institute of Amazon Environmental Research (IPAM)** explained that **Roraima is especially vulnerable** due to its **dry season at the beginning of the year**, which increases the fires.
*”The first-quarter data reflects this climatic seasonality, positioning Roraima as the main focus of fires in Brazil,”* he stated.
## Increase in fires in other biomes
– The Cerrado saw a 12% increase compared to the previous year, with 91,700 hectares burned, 106% above the historical average since 2019.
– The Atlantic Forest and the Pampas also showed increases of 7% and 1.4%, respectively.
– The Pantanal and the Caatinga experienced reductions of 86% and 8%, with 10,900 and 10,000 hectares affected, respectively.
Despite the **72% decrease** compared to 2024, the **Amazon** remains the **most impacted biome**, with **774,000 hectares burned**, representing **78% of the national total**.
## Key data on fires in Brazil during March
Only in **March 2025**, fires affected **106,600 hectares**, equivalent to **10% of the total in the first quarter**.
Compared to **March 2024**, **674,900 hectares less** were burned, representing an **86% reduction**.
– **Amazon**: 55,100 hectares burned.
– **Cerrado**: 37,800 hectares.
– **Caatinga**: 2,200 hectares.
– **Atlantic Forest**: 9,200 hectares.
– **Pampas**: 1,500 hectares.
– **Pantanal**: 561 hectares.
## The challenge of preventing future fires
Despite the **overall reduction in fires**, experts warn that the situation in the **Cerrado and the Amazon** remains concerning.
An **integral prevention plan** is required, combining **monitoring, control strategies, and specific measures for each biome** to reduce **environmental and social impacts**.
