Pakistan: Parks and museums closed due to record levels of pollution

Most read

Authorities in the eastern part of Pakistan have closed all parks and museums due to record levels of pollution, which had already led to the closure of schools and government offices, affecting tens of thousands of people.

The new restrictions, in place for ten days in 18 districts of the Punjab province, include the provincial capital of Lahore, where visibility has drastically decreased. The closures apply to public parks, zoos, museums, historical sites, and play areas.

Health Impact

A toxic smog has affected Lahore and other parts of Punjab since last month. More than 30,000 people have been treated for respiratory problems. The new restrictions aim to keep people at home to protect them from the record pollution.

Additional Measures

A court in Lahore ordered the closure of all markets after 8 p.m. and banned barbecues without filters. Lahore was the most polluted city in the world on Friday, with Air Quality Index readings over 600, which is extremely hazardous to health.

The school closures will affect more than 20 million students. The government has been urged to implement long-term solutions to the pollution problem to prevent children from missing classes in the future.
