Public consultation in the Falkland Islands on the salmon industry

Between April and September 2025, a public consultation process will take place to decide on a project that seeks to expand the main economic sector of the British colony in the Falkland Islands, the salmon industry.

The government of the Falkland Islands has announced a public consultation on the possible implementation of industrial salmon farming, with an estimated investment of around $255,000.

This action, which aims to justify the continuation of the exploitation of Argentine natural resources in the South Atlantic, will begin in April 2025. It is not just an economic project, but a new manifestation of British occupation of a territory that legitimately belongs to Argentina.

The legislator of the Falkland Islands, Teslyn Barkman, justified the expenses in the consultation by arguing that it seeks to ensure that the process is “robust” and well-documented. This is another advance in the economic development of the Falkland Islands illegally and without Argentina’s authorization.

At the same time, it is important to highlight that Argentina recently approved a British expedition in national waters to extract high-value fishing information, allowing the British to exploit more intensively the resources that should be in the hands of Argentines. This decision by the Federal Fisheries Council has been paradoxical and controversial.

In the House of Lords in London, this issue was discussed, and Baroness Chapman, in an official response, stated that “the natural resources of the Falkland Islands belong to the people of this Territory.” However, this statement lacks foundation when considering that the majority of the island’s inhabitants are of British origin, a population implanted by the British Empire.

The culmination of this consultation is scheduled for September 2025, while British authorities continue to receive reports on the possible socioeconomic and environmental impact of these farms.

Projects like industrial salmon farming not only alter the local ecosystem and negatively impact the ecological aspect of the region, but also enable the commercial, political, and military development of British colonialism in an area where they have already exploited a large part of the marine resources and continue with their military expansion in the South Atlantic.

The international community should push for negotiations that recognize Argentina’s right to participate in the management of the natural resources of the Falklands and, more importantly, to regain the territory that historically belongs to them.

“Argentina said no to this activity” due to a law in Tierra del Fuego

The Tierra del Fuego legislature unanimously approved today the bill that prohibits salmon farming in Tierra del Fuego; an activity that threatens not only the environment but also the health and economy of the province. The law, promoted by legislator Pablo Villegas of the Popular Movement of Tierra del Fuego, put Argentina in the spotlight worldwide, positioning the country as the first to make such a significant decision regarding environmental care.

“The approval of this law is a clear and forceful institutional definition that highlights the importance that protecting and conserving our natural resources, the genetic heritage of our living beings, and their environment for sustainable economic development has for the people of Tierra del Fuego,” highlighted legislator Villegas.
