Salta: Children walk through contaminated waters to get to school

Parents take their sons and daughters to School 4820 in Rivadavia Banda Sur (Salta), facing obstacles such as walking long distances or crossing paths flooded with contaminated water.

“We have asked for a wooden bridge to be built or for pipes to be installed to be able to go to school and also return home,” Demetrio Campos, bilingual assistant teacher and chieftain of the Wichí community in Rivadavia Banda Sur, shared in a video. The teacher used social media to insist on his request, which is still awaiting a response.

Sanitary Conditions

The school, which serves more than 200 children, faces health problems due to stagnant and contaminated water from sewage overflow, especially during the rainy season.

The sewage system always “bursts at the level of the Wichí community” located in the same town of Rivadavia, Demetrio Campos stated. “Unfortunately, almost the entire town suffers from sewage bursting,” he added, explaining that this phenomenon occurs during rains.

Despite the warnings, children often walk and bathe in this contaminated water, which has caused several diseases.

The Wichí community and other nearby areas lack health posts. The nearest medical facility is 50 kilometers away, complicating emergency care. Campos recalled a case in which a woman had to wait a whole day to receive medical assistance after giving birth.
