Since 2018, an ambitious project has marked a before and after in communities of Jujuy, Argentina, by bringing solar energy to populations with limited access to electricity, with the leadership of local women.
The initiative arose thanks to the alliance between EKHOS and Barefoot College Tilonia, an Indian organization dedicated to training rural women in home solar engineering.
Four women from Jujuy traveled to Tilonia, India, where for six months they were trained to become Solar Technicians.
Since then, they have worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality, managing scholarships, coordinating with authorities, and promoting the project in international forums.
The new phase of the solar energy project: illuminating public spaces
After years of efforts, the project achieved a key alliance with Signify Foundation and Signify Argentina, who will provide solar lighting for community spaces in the Puna region.
More than just lighting, these solutions represent:
- Safety and active nightlife in isolated communities.
- Meeting and recreation spaces for residents.
- More study hours for children and young people.
- Boosting local businesses and access to electrical devices.
- Reduction of contaminating lighting sources.
- Preventing rural migration to cities due to lack of services.
- All of this, led by the solar technician women, who continue to expand their impact in the region.
What’s next and how to join the project?
In June 2025, the installation of photovoltaic luminaires in 12 communities of Jujuy begins.
To move forward strongly, the project is looking for new collaborations:
- Materials and tools to ensure safe installations.
- Financial support and donations for logistics and expansion.
- Greater visibility and networking to strengthen the initiative.
“We are ready to illuminate spaces that have been waiting for light for years”—affirm the organizers.
Those who wish to contribute can do so through financing, equipment donation, or project dissemination.
