Phoenix Eye: The Advanced Fire Prediction System

Most read

After the forest fires that devastated more than 160 kilometers in Los Angeles, California, United States, a group of Mexican students developed an advanced fire prediction system that saves lives. This initiative arose after the fire in Los Angeles claimed the lives of 24 people, a number that could increase due to the firefighters’ struggle to contain the flames.

What is happening in California is nothing but a clear example of the tragedies that nature can cause, resulting in great losses. During March 2024, fire severely hit Mexico, where the flames razed more than 32,000 hectares in a single month, and about four people died as a result of the fires.

Faced with this situation, a group of students from the Sonora and Guadalajara campuses of Mexico’s main engineering university, Tecnológico de Monterrey, developed an advanced forest fire prediction system with a machine learning system. This led to the creation of Phoenix Eye, a project that uses Artificial Intelligence to predict the trajectory of fires and send alerts to people who may be at risk, even if they are in areas with limited internet and power access.

This forest fire prediction tool features a LoRa communication protocol, which includes a wireless system that allows devices to interconnect over long distances. Furthermore, it helps authorities save lives and protect communities from fires.

The future of the advanced fire prediction system, Phoenix Eye

The eight entrepreneurs and creators of Phoenix Eye, gained recognition, not only locally but also internationally after participating in the Prototypes for Humanity competition in Dubai, a prestigious global competition where works from all over the world are presented.

Moreover, Phoenix Eye received support from the The Coramino Fund program at Tecnológico de Monterrey and Gran Coramino, where they received different advice to boost the project both technically and in business development. This helped them strengthen the foundations of their growth and implementation.

Fires in California: Wind Fans Flames in Los Angeles and 24 Dead

The fires in California continue to be active. Los Angeles, in particular, has been facing an unprecedented crisis as the fire has already swept through entire neighborhoods and left at least 24 dead.

Furthermore, in the past few hours, the winds in the area have fanned the flames and thousands of evacuees have been added.

Authorities reported that 16 people remain missing, and it is expected that this number will increase as rescue efforts progress.
