This project focuses on reusing rainwater in urban environments, with the aim of using it in toilets and laundries, which represent 51% of water consumption in a household. In addition, the system can work with greywater, maximizing its efficiency.

How the roof tile that reuses rainwater works

The design aims to efficiently collect and utilize rainwater in domestic settings. It integrates a water filtration system into the structure of a house, harnessing gravity for distribution. It promotes sustainability by reducing dependence on centralized and costly water systems, resulting in a positive environmental impact.

The system incorporates a rainwater collection mechanism in the house’s structure, utilizing the roof and attic. It has three main components:

  • Modified tiles that capture rainwater and perform an initial filtration.
  • A secondary filter, designed to standard pipe system dimensions, that enhances the quality of the collected water.
  • A modular tank located in the roof structure, storing and distributing water through a gravity-fed system.

This approach minimizes energy usage by avoiding pumps and complex mechanisms. The project stands out for its total integration into the house’s structure, unlike traditional water collection systems that are often external elements. Furthermore, the use of gravity-fed mechanisms reduces energy consumption associated with pumping systems.

Future Plans

The next steps include expanding the design’s applicability and improving its efficiency. This involves researching sustainable materials and manufacturing processes that reinforce a regenerative and holistic approach.

The goal is to further reduce the product’s environmental impact and expand its reach globally. The creator also aims to continue developing solutions that have a positive impact on the environment and communities, recognizing the responsibility of designers to contribute to a sustainable future.
