After having joined the largest cleaning event in history in 2021, Coldplay will release their vinyl record made from recycled ocean plastics. The British band teamed up with The Ocean Cleanup for this initiative, and the album Moon Music is now available for pre-order.

The recycling of bottles will prevent the manufacture of more than 25 tons of virgin plastic.

Furthermore, it will reduce CO2 emissions by 85% compared to the production of traditional 140-gram vinyl, as reported by the group in an official statement.

The creation of a special edition in a “notebook” format incorporated 70% river plastic, intercepted by The Ocean Cleanup from the Las Vacas River, Guatemala.

This prevented the contaminating material from reaching the Gulf of Honduras and the Atlantic Ocean.

The commitment to make Coldplay’s tenth album as sustainable as possible adds to other innovative measures by the group, which on their last tour reduced CO2 emissions by 59% compared to the previous one.

Regarding the CD editions of Moon Music, they will be made with 90% recycled plastic, reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 78%. It will also prevent the production of five tons of virgin plastic.

In their effort to reduce waste, the first edition of the record (both EcoRecord LP and EcoCD) will be strictly limited and with higher specifications than any future editions, as stated by the group.

Global crisis due to plastic pollution

Plastic pollution is considered a global crisis by the UN. It represents the second biggest environmental threat to the planet, with negative impacts on all ecosystems, including marine biodiversity, according to Oceana.
