In the northwest of Argentina, the province of **La Rioja** is home to a site that witnesses a surprising **natural phenomenon**: the coexistence of two rivers, one yellow and the other black water, flowing side by side without mixing.
A Unique Natural Phenomenon
**Las Cuevas** is an astonishing place in La Rioja where the yellow river and the black river coexist without colliding.
The yellow color of the first river is due to the oxidation of iron near the gold mine “La Mejicana,” while the black river, with a transparent flow, originates in the **Quebrada del Agua Negra**. This confluence creates a striking visual spectacle.
How to Get to Las Cuevas
This confluence is located only 16 kilometers from Chilecito, but access is challenging due to [its mountainous location](https://noticiasambientales.com/turismo/la-rioja-presenta-nuevas-propuestas-turisticas-en-fit-con-un-fuerte-respaldo-del-sector-privado/) at 3,000 meters above sea level.
It is advisable to use off-road vehicles and/or specialized guides for a more complete experience. From Chilecito, take the detour at kilometer 13 of RP 14 towards the gold mine “La Mejicana.”
History of the “La Mejicana” Mine
Founded in the late 19th century, the gold mine “La Mejicana” was an important center of mining activity. Although it ceased operations in the 1920s, its cable car structure, an engineering feat of the time, can still be partially explored. The mine [is a tourist attraction](https://noticiasambientales.com/turismo/turismo-regenerativo-transformando-la-industria-turistica-en-colombia/) that preserves remnants of its past splendor.
