Day of Environmental Education: transforming the relationship with nature.

Within the framework of the **World Day of Environmental Education**, celebrated on January 26, it is important to highlight its centrality in transforming our relationship with nature.

**Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina** reinforces its commitment to education as an essential tool to address the triple planetary crisis: **[climate change](https://noticiasambientales.com/ciencia/el-cambio-climatico-va-a-empeorar-la-contaminacion-por-ozono/)**, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

## Environmental Education Day: “Not just to raise awareness”

With over four decades of work, the organization maintains its objectives of **educating, inspiring, and empowering** teachers, students, and society throughout the country. The goal is to generate and promote a **cultural change that promotes nature conservation** and sustainable development.

“Environmental education not only raises awareness about the challenges we face but also provides the necessary tools to take action and build a future in harmony with nature,” says Martín Font, Director of Communication and Environmental Education at Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina.

“Environmental education is understood as the fundamental tool to **drive a cultural transformation** based on responsible consumption of natural resources and the development of environmental awareness,” he emphasizes.

At this critical moment, we must seize this opportunity to have a positive impact and reverse the damage caused,” Font adds.

In this sense, it is a tool that goes beyond classrooms and disciplines, integrating into people’s daily lives. The **Comprehensive Environmental Education Law** in Argentina represents a significant step towards incorporating this **theme into the educational system**.

However, challenges persist. “It is crucial to ensure the effective implementation of this law and recognize that environmental issues cut across all areas of knowledge, integrating the relationship between society and nature in a transversal manner,” Vida Silvestre insists.

## Call to Action: Reflection and Commitment

The organization has shared, leading up to the date, some tools to help build a society that values nature and recognizes its importance as the sustenance of life on the planet:

– In a globalized world, we often know more about **species from other continents** than those from our own country. “On the website ([educacion.vidasilvestre.org.ar](https://educacion.vidasilvestre.org.ar/)), we offer free ecoregional notebooks about Antarctica, the Gran Chaco, the Argentine Sea, the Pampas, and the Misiones Jungle, providing information about their characteristics and distinctive species,” they indicate.
– **Create and share**: after informing yourself, create **content that inspires others to care for** our planet. Environmental education begins with small actions that generate a collective impact.
– **Avoid**: promoting **responsible consumption** is key to facing challenges such as single-use plastics, fast fashion, and food waste, which exacerbate pollution and **harm our ecosystems**. The notebook on responsible consumption, with information and practical activities to work on the subject in the classroom, is also available on the site.
– **Discover**: fostering critical thinking through documentaries like *Yaguareté, the last frontier* and *Chaco Gualamba, the last opportunity*, or learning about the role of wildlife in the environment through our series of animated videos.

“We are convinced that environmental education is the **basis of cultural change** in which the entire society must participate: the change in how we relate to the environment,” they emphasize.

“Today, it is estimated that we **consume 70% more** natural resources than the planet can provide, and we urgently need to reverse this trend. As these are situations that affect the whole society, **comprehensive solution perspectives** are also necessary,” Font concludes.

## Why is Environmental Education Day celebrated?

The date was established in 1972 by the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden.

Environmental education is a pedagogical mechanism that seeks to raise awareness and provide solutions to environmental issues. It also aims to create a conservationist culture that applies clean techniques in production processes.
