Why is it not recommended to reuse plastic bottles for drinking water

A recent scientific study revealed why it is not advisable to reuse a plastic bottle for drinking water.

Research on the health impact is almost constant. In this sense, Chinese researchers investigated this issue and published the results in Communications Biology.

The main problem with reusing a plastic bottle for drinking water

Among the conclusions, they highlighted the fact that plastic bottles are the main source of microplastic ingestion in humans.

Additionally, they are the main carriers of benzopyrene to the body. This is a contaminant found in the environment that has been proven to be toxic.

Furthermore, among the findings by the researchers is the impact that microplastics would have on health, as they can cause damage to internal organs once absorbed through the digestive system.

According to the study, these particles can cause “significant damage” to the intestinal wall and kidneys, causing “systemic inflammation,” as cited in the study.

Their main characteristic is their tiny size, barely five millimeters, which greatly hinders their elimination. They are not only found in the environment but also in foods, seas, and oceans.

They are usually generated from the fragmentation of larger plastics. Hence the importance of proper management when disposing of them.

As an alternative to bottled water, you can purchase reusable bottles, such as glass or aluminum.

Microplastics at home: where they are most present and how to avoid them

The microplastics have spread so much due to plastic pollution that it is very difficult to detect where they may be more prevalent.

Although these particles are ubiquitous in the environment, there are numerous sources contributing to their presence and alternatives to help avoid them, starting with your kitchen.

The 5 products to avoid to reduce exposure to microplastics

1. Plastic cutting boards

According to a study by the American Chemical Society, only cutting boards could expose humans to up to 79.4 million microplastics of polypropylene – a type of plastic polymer – per year.

Therefore, tempered glass cutting boards are an economical, easy to clean alternative that is usually free of microplastics.

2. Microwave-safe food containers

Plastic products labeled as “microwave-safe” can release significant amounts of microplastics into food when heated.

A 2023 study by researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found up to 4 million microplastics per square centimeter in certain foods packaged in “microwave-safe” plastics.

Another option is to avoid products packaged with phthalates, styrene, and bisphenols, which are types of chemical substances associated with various plastics, as suggested by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

3. Plastic ice cube trays

Just as microplastics are found in bottled water, plastic ice cube trays could also cause contamination.

Although there is less research on this, freezing plastic can cause particles to leach into the water, similar to the process observed with heated plastics. This was indicated by an associate professor interviewed by the American health portal HealthCentral.

In recent years, a more sustainable option has emerged: stainless steel ice cube trays. Not only do they enhance the aesthetics of drinks, but they also cool down faster.

Similarly, silicone ice cube trays are promoted as a sustainable alternative.

5. Paper cups

Although paper cups are assumed to be more environmentally friendly, they surprisingly contribute to plastic pollution. These require a waterproof layer, which usually consists of up to 10% high-density polyethylene to prevent liquid leaks.

Recycling paper cups is problematic due to the need to separate the waterproof layer from the paper, complicating the process.

Choosing a reusable stainless steel thermos benefits not only the environment but also reduces exposure to microplastics.
