In great news for ecotourism in Chubut, it has been confirmed, according to a study, that around 2800 dolphins arrived at Golfo San Matías between 2004 and 2022.
The area is home to an impressive marine biodiversity, and this research managed to quantify the case of the cetaceans. Researchers used a database of dorsal fin photos taken since 2004 to identify unique individuals.
Dolphins in Golfo San Matías: what does the research say?
The results of the study indicate that, between 2004 and 2022, approximately 2800 dolphins entered the Gulf.
In 2022, around 1200 individuals were identified. This confirms that dolphins are present throughout the year, although the size and composition of the groups may vary.
The research also highlights that these cetaceans enter and leave the Gulf constantly, making the area a strategic point for dolphin watching.

There are two local companies that provide dolphin watching services (“Estación Marítima Commersoni” and “Toninas Adventure”), which are already prepared to welcome visitors with specially adapted boats.
What is the Gulf like?
- It extends between punta Bermeja, in Río Negro, and punta Norte, at the end of the Valdés Peninsula.
- It has a depth of about 148 km and a width at its mouth of about 118 km.
- The waters are very deep and safe for navigation.
- Inside, you can find the ports of San Antonio Oeste, San Antonio Este, and Punta Colorada.
