The City Council of Barcelona announced a pilot experiment with smart containers in four areas of the city.

Although the exact locations have not been defined yet, this initiative aims to optimize efficiency in selective waste collection and move towards a more sustainable management.

Progressive development of the project

The initiative will initially benefit around 50,000 inhabitants, and key decisions, such as the location and implementation schedule, will be made within the framework of the working group created for this purpose.

To ensure the success of the project, the City Council has organized visits to municipalities that have already implemented smart containers.

These include Sant Just Desvern (March 12), Manresa (March 18), and a telematic session with Seu d’Urgell (March 24).

The proposal seeks a gradual implementation of the smart container model, aiming to ensure a more equitable waste rate and improve selective collection.

What are smart containers?

A smart recycling container is an innovative and technologically advanced version of a traditional garbage bin, ultimately aiming to send less waste to landfill.

They are equipped with sensors, have connectivity functions and data analysis to improve waste management and recycling. They are designed to make waste collection more efficient, convenient, and sustainable, both for businesses and consumers.

In addition to sensors and data capture functions, a smart recycling container can also include automatic sorting technologies and a compactor.

These functions are often supported by AI technologies that can effectively identify types of waste and send them to the appropriate containers. Once the containers are full, the smart container can be emptied, and waste streams can be easily diverted to the correct recycling facility.
