An innovative initiative has achieved clear progress in reducing the environmental impact of waste in the Arroyo Escobar. Over five tons of garbage have already been removed from the watercourse in the Buenos Aires province.
In a recent cleanup operation, over five tons of garbage were removed using an ecoboard. This is a floating barrier handmade with plastic bottles and a polyethylene mesh.
Ecoboard in Arroyo Escobar: more than five tons of garbage removed
Professional ecoboard in Arroyo Escobar.
At the end of last year, it was installed with the aim of preventing thousands of waste items from ending up in the Ingeniero Maschwitz Environmental Education Reserve. It is located in the town of Maquinista Savio and extends for 25 meters.
This project is carried out by the Municipality in conjunction with the Wildlife Foundation and aims to prevent waste from being carried by the current to the Ingeniero Maschwitz Educational Nature Reserve.
During a new collection day, the ecoboard captured 5200 kilos of garbage. This is equivalent to 26 completely filled bags that were circulating in the water flow.
The environmental program
The implementation of this barrier is part of a broader environmental program that was in progress throughout 2024.
In addition to the work of environmental organizations and hundreds of volunteers, 27,500 kilos of waste were removed from the streams of Escobar during the past year.
“This result shows that concrete actions can generate a positive and direct environmental impact,” highlighted Mayor Ariel Sujarchuk in a statement released by the Municipality.
“While we continue to work on raising awareness about waste separation at the source and proper disposal of waste, we see how these tools are essential to protect our ecosystems,” he added.
