The municipality of Godoy Cruz removed tons of waste from the Los Cerrillos canal using 10 trucks that made 100 trips to transport the waste.
In total, the municipality of Godoy Cruz removed 678 tons of waste from the Los Cerrillos canal in a 3-kilometer stretch. With the aim of cleaning this collector and protecting the environment, the work was carried out for 12 uninterrupted days, requiring 100 trips for the waste transportation.
The Municipality, under the direction of Diego Costarelli, carried out deep cleaning tasks in collaboration with the Provincial Hydraulics Department. The operation extended from the border with Luján de Cuyo to the Maure canal, covering over 3 kilometers in length.
With 10-hour workdays, including weekends, municipal workers managed to remove 678,200 kilos of waste. To do this, they made 100 truck trips to the classification plant on Independencia Street, and later, the final disposal at El Borbollón (Las Heras).
For waste transportation, 10 trucks, a hydro truck, and 2 backhoes were used. A hydraulic mini-loader was also employed.

The removal of a huge amount of accumulated waste in the Los Cerrillos collector is part of Godoy Cruz’s municipal plan for cleaning canals and ditches, aiming to care for the environment and protect flood defense works.
This operation was carried out in conjunction with an awareness campaign in the area about the correct waste management, alerting the population about the negative consequences of throwing garbage into the canals.
“Incorrectly disposing of waste in water channels not only affects public health, promoting the proliferation of rodents and insects like the dengue mosquito, but also jeopardizes hydraulic safety during storms,” municipal authorities emphasized.
In line with the cleaning of the Los Cerrillos canal, a “clean-up” operation was carried out in the Piedras Blancas settlement located in the area. Items such as containers and tires, considered potential breeding grounds for the dengue mosquito Aedes aegypti, were removed.
The Municipality of Godoy Cruz clarified that the maintenance and cleaning of the alluvial channels “are the responsibility of the Provincial Hydraulics Department and are carried out once a year.” However, on this occasion, the municipality provided logistical support “to ensure the effectiveness of the tasks.”

Raising awareness in the community to dispose of waste in the right places was part of this operation, with a special focus on areas where the municipality does not provide household waste collection.
In settlements, for example, a “house-to-house” campaign was carried out in Piedras Blancas to perform a “clean-up,” as highlighted by Martín García, Director of Health in Godoy Cruz.
The official detailed that in settlements where the garbage truck does not enter, “we clean twice a week, and the increase in waste year after year is striking, with all that implies for public health.” Therefore, these operations include disinfection and sanitization actions in the area.
Martín García specified that all kinds of waste were removed from the Los Cerrillos canal, except those suitable for recycling, such as cans, plastics, or dry paper and cardboard, which you won’t find because they are sold. Similar operations were also carried out last March and July, that time in the Maure canal.
The accumulation of waste in canals and ditches is a constant issue throughout the province, appealing to citizens’ awareness to collaborate in preserving cleanliness, caring for the environment, and avoiding the malfunction of these aqueducts during future storms.
