The Municipality and the government of Santa Fe are moving forward together with the cleaning and sanitation tasks of the Ludueña stream. They are located in a sector in the northwest of Rosario for the removal and disposal of waste that is thrown and remains in the water.

Two backhoe machines are being used, each with a 9-meter-long arm. This allows working simultaneously in two sectors of the stream, to protect biodiversity.

Ludueña stream sanitation: stages

The cleaning tasks are part of the Ludueña Basin Approach Plan, which aims to provide solutions to a historical problem.

It covers from the flood risk and changes in land use, to the impact of economic activities and irregular settlements, in addition to the presence of solid waste and unauthorized discharges in a sector.

The Ministry of Public Works, through the Secretariat of Water Resources, presented the stream cleaning plan in December.

Now, one of the machines is working on the streambed, removing waste from the margins. The other one picks them up and deposits them on the west bank, where trucks will later take them away.

At the end of the year, an 18-meter, 32-ton backhoe was used, with which work was carried out from the inside to affect the vegetation as little as possible.

What is the Ludueña Basin Approach Plan like

“It is the first step in the search for solutions to a historical problem, adopting a socio-environmental perspective that considers both the natural environment of the basin and the economic and social dynamics that surround it,” authorities stated.

The Ludueña Basin Approach Plan has three lines of work and action:

  • Citizen participation with which residents participated in the public hearing process can get involved in the planning and execution of basin improvement actions.
  • Urban transformations: direct interventions on the territory. Through joint coordination between the provincial Ministry of Public Works and the Municipality, cleaning works are carried out in critical areas. Mainly in the surroundings of the Stella Maris and La Bombacha neighborhoods.
  • Complementation through other programs such as Focused Neighborhood Interventions (IBF), from the Ministry of Justice and Security, and the Plan Abre, from the Ministry of Equality and Human Development. Through these programs, urban infrastructure and services works are executed, along with comprehensive social intervention in the most affected areas.

Comprehensive control and monitoring

In parallel, jointly with Aguas Santafesinas, surveys of the rainfall and sewage system are being carried out. The goal is to ensure proper functioning and prevent irregular discharges.

Additionally, environmental quality control and monitoring is being conducted. Through ongoing monitoring of the water quality of the stream and its tributaries, and the control of economic activities impacting the basin.
