The new regulations for recycling packaging are already in effect in Spain. This was planned in accordance with the European regulations for 2025. Since January 1st, it is mandatory to specify on each package which type of recycling container they correspond to.

Given that many people still hesitate when disposing of waste, the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation has been implemented in Spain since January 1st.

With the New Year, a new regulation for household packaging affecting all supermarkets has also arrived.

New regulations for recycling packaging: where are the labels

From now on, all packaging, except for B2B, must specify through labeling the container they should be deposited in: yellow, green, brown, or blue.

These new labels will be present on food and cleaning products.

The regulation replaces the Directive 94/62 of the European Commission and aims to reduce packaging waste and promote reuse and refilling.

One of the problems that arise is that a large part of society does not know where to dispose of each package.

Therefore, this new regulation has been positively received by users so far: “It’s a good idea for those who don’t know how to do it.”

Messages to respect the environment

The new labeling must be framed, visible, and easily legible. In addition, phrases to encourage environmental respect are intended to be included. It will also be mandatory to indicate if the packaging is reusable.

By 2030, the Technological Institute of Plastics (Aimplas) confirmed that some types of single-use plastic packaging will be strictly prohibited.

By those dates, manufacturers must have minimized the weight and volume of the packaging, taking into account safety and functionality.

Extended responsibility and the path to zero plastic

The Royal Decree also establishes that companies selling packaged products must adhere to Extended Producer Responsibility Systems (SCRAP or SIRAP).

This requires companies to manage the waste generated by their packaging through a fee, the implementation of which is now mandatory.

But this is just a first step. Looking ahead to the near future, the regulations foresee prohibiting certain single-use plastic packaging by 2030.

These include fresh, unprocessed fruit and vegetable packaging, individual portion packs such as seasonings or sauces, and ultra-light bags of less than 15 microns.

Furthermore, manufacturers must reduce the weight and volume of the packaging to minimize environmental impact without compromising functionality.
