In an effort to monitor the environmental quality of the Uruguay River, park rangers from the Islas y Canales Verdes Provincial Natural Park carried out a large-scale sampling.
This was done in coordination with specialists from the Autonomous University of Entre Ríos (UADER) and with the support of the Argentine Naval Prefecture.
The initiative included the collection of water samples for physicochemical, microbiological, phytoplankton, and zooplankton analysis, as well as studies on benthos.
A historic monitoring operation
The environmental sampling had the support of the park’s boat, under the supervision of the park’s manager Malena Maroli. It was led by prefect Mariana Abelando, accompanied by a crew of eight prefects aboard the ship “Dr. Leloir”.
According to Maroli, this study marks a milestone, being the first sampling of its kind and scope carried out by the Naval Prefecture on the Uruguay River.
The ecological value of the Islas y Canales Verdes Park
The park, with 4006 hectares of islands, wetlands, and riparian forests, is a model of collaborative conservation promoted by organizations such as:
- Butler Conservation.
- WCS Argentina.
- Banco de Bosques.
- AMBÁ de Uruguay.
In addition to protecting biodiversity, the area promotes ecotourism and environmental education, aligning with the global goals of the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, which aims to conserve at least 30% of the planet by 2030.
Impact and strengthening of conservation
These types of initiatives not only allow to monitor ecosystem health, but also strengthen the protected natural areas policy in Entre Ríos, contributing to the sustainable development of tourism and educational activities.
The Islas y Canales Verdes Park continues to consolidate as a strategic asset for conservation, demonstrating that environmental commitment and joint work are essential for the protection of natural resources.
