Space debris found in rural areas of Santa Fe: researchers seek to confirm its origin

Most read

Rural workers from Armstrong and Cañada de Gómez reported the discovery of objects in fields in the south of Santa Fe. According to initial assessments, they could be space debris.

One of the discoveries occurred in Cañada de Gómez, near the Rural School “Campo Mosca”, where an unknown object was found in the middle of the week.

Official confirmation on the origin of the object

This Sunday, a team made up of Volunteer Firefighters from Cañada de Gómez and Bustinza, along with Civil Protection and Commodore Rubén Lianza, director of the Aerospace Identification Center (CIAE) of the Argentine Air Force, inspected the area.

After a survey, the CIAE determined that it is space debris, ruling out any radiation activity. The object was removed under custody for analysis at the Aerospace Identification Center.

Another discovery in Armstrong

A few kilometers from Cañada de Gómez, in Armstrong, a rural producer named Héctor discovered a strange object lined with black material, which got stuck in the auger of a harvester while performing agricultural tasks.

The producer highlighted the resilience of the material, describing it as “unbreakable”. The images show similarities with the object found in Cañada de Gómez.

What is space debris?

The main hypothesis indicates that the found objects are Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs), components used in space flights.

In February 2024, the BBC reported the discovery of a similar object in Poland, identified as debris from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, owned by Elon Musk.

In that case, the object appeared in the town of Komorniki, causing damage to electricity poles. It was later identified as part of a space mission.

An increasingly frequent phenomenon

Space debris findings have been reported in different regions of the world. This raises concerns about the impact of orbital debris on Earth.

While these elements usually disintegrate upon re-entering the atmosphere, some fragments survive the descent, falling in rural or sparsely populated areas.

In Argentina, cases like those in Cañada de Gómez and Armstrong reinforce the need to continue monitoring this space debris, ensuring its identification and safe handling.
