Electric mobility boosts green employment: ecological transformation of the workforce

Most read

The electric mobility sector in Spain is generating **a profound transformation in the labor market**. According to the first study conducted by *Worldwide Recruitment Energy (WRE)*, it is estimated that by 2030, more than **550,000** [jobs](https://noticiasambientales.com/innovacion/empleos-verdes-las-demandas-y-oportunidades-de-la-transicion-energetica/) linked to this industry, marked by sustainability, innovation, and energy transition, could be created.

Currently, the sector generates around **€4.5 billion** annually, combining the sale of electric vehicles and the development of charging infrastructures. This figure positions **Spain in a consolidation phase within the global market**, where electric vehicles already represent 15% of sales, and 12% in the Spanish case.

One of the main identified challenges is the **shortage of qualified profiles**. At least **165,000 specialized workers** will be required in areas such as electrical installation, engineering, and battery development. 60% of the companies in the sector plan to increase their workforce in the next 12 months.

However, there are still obstacles. **73% of the professionals** consulted point out that the main barriers are the low autonomy of vehicles, prolonged charging times, and the lack of an efficient charging network. These technical challenges limit the massive adoption of electric vehicles.

## Ecological Opportunity and Labor Restructuring

Electric mobility not only offers a cleaner way for transportation but is also transforming the labor landscape. There is a projected **shift of workers from the combustion sector** to energy and sustainable infrastructure industries. This will imply professional reorientation and specific training.

For instance, **battery recycling** could increase employment in that subsector by 20%, while the deployment of charging points will require **17,000 new workers**. Value chains related to batteries could generate **8,000 additional positions**.

In terms of profiles, engineers, electrical installers, and technicians with commercial skills are predominant. Despite the demand, only 4% of current professionals are installation technicians, highlighting an urgent talent gap to be filled.

Although electric vehicle registrations slowed down in 2024, the ecological drive of the sector remains strong. Spain has the **opportunity to lead a transition that not only reduces emissions** but also revitalizes employment in a sustainable manner.

## Global Leaders in Electric Mobility

**China leads the global development of electric mobility**. With millions of electric cars on the roads and a vast charging network, the Asian country boosts its production with brands like BYD and NIO, along with favorable government policies.

**Norway stands out for its high per capita adoption of electric vehicles**. Over 80% of new cars sold in the country are electric, thanks to tax exemptions, toll-free roads, and a well-developed charging infrastructure.

**Germany, as an automotive powerhouse, strongly committed to the electric transition**. Brands like Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz are investing billions in electric models and charging stations inside and outside the country.

**The United States is also advancing, especially with Tesla leading the market**. The government promotes incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles and the expansion of the charging network, with a renewed focus under the current administration.
