Vanishing packaging: the seaweed revolution advancing against single-use plastic

Natural packaging that multiplies

Seaweed coatings allow boxes, trays, and wrappers to be transformed into compostable pieces. Their use in stadiums, offices, and museums marks progress for spaces where plastic dominates due to logistics.

Catering companies and large sports venues are already incorporating these alternatives without altering operations. The growth also reaches retail, including restaurants and prepared food stores.

New lines incorporate plastic-free windows that allow viewing the product without compromising biodegradation. It is projected that, in a few years, this solution will be used massively in different countries.

A proposal seeking to establish itself globally

The project, carried out by Notpla, expands its reach by offering coatings directly to cardboard manufacturers. The goal is to reduce the use of synthetic polymers from the industry, not just in final products.

The company behind the advancement aims to make the absence of plastic a recognizable standard. Scientific development continues with prototypes of cups and improvements in formats already available.

Although seaweed does not replicate the total barriers of plastic, its ability to degrade is its main strength. This quality positions them as a key solution in the transition towards truly sustainable materials.
