United Against the Flames: Chile Sends Two Aircraft to Argentine Patagonia to Combat Forest Fires

As wildfires advance over vast areas of the Argentine Patagonia, the response has begun to cross borders. In this context, the Chilean government confirmed the dispatch of two aircraft to assist in firefighting efforts.

The assistance was formally requested by Argentina and was activated through a binational cooperation scheme. Thus, the environmental emergency is addressed as a regional problem that requires coordinated responses.

In this way, operational solidarity is added to local efforts in a scenario marked by drought, high temperatures, and persistent winds.

Air support for critical areas

The operation includes a single-engine AT-802 plane, specialized in firefighting, and a multipurpose AS350 B3 helicopter. Both aircraft belong to the National Forestry Corporation of Chile and have high maneuverability.

According to the plan, flights will be concentrated in the Los Alerces National Park and various points in the province of Chubut. These areas are among the most affected by the advancing fire.

The deployment will have an estimated duration of ten days, with a maximum of seventy flight hours. Additionally, the full funding is covered by the Chilean government.

Regional coordination against fire

The activation of this support involved the coordination of various Chilean agencies, including Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Agriculture. This institutional framework enabled a rapid response to the Argentine request.

The Chilean government emphasized that the aid does not compromise the National Plan against Wildfires 2025–2026. On the contrary, it is maintained as part of a tradition of collaboration in the face of disasters.

Furthermore, authorities stressed that wildfires do not recognize political boundaries, so prevention and combat must be considered in an integrated manner.

Reinforcements from the mountains

The air assistance is complemented by ground support sent from the Los Lagos Region. In this context, the Palena Fire Department transported a fire truck, a support vehicle, and five specialized volunteers.

This reinforcement was requested by the municipality of Esquel and adds to the work of Argentine brigades. Thus, cooperation is expressed both in technical resources and human capital.

The presence of binational teams on the ground enhances the response capacity and accelerates containment efforts in hard-to-reach areas.

Cooperation aimed at saving nature

The cooperation between Chile and Argentina allows for faster action, reducing the area affected by fire and protecting native forests of high ecological value. This is key to preserving biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Additionally, the joint work optimizes resources and strengthens the exchange of technical experience, something fundamental in the face of the increase in fires associated with climate change.

Finally, this type of initiative consolidates a regional perspective on fire management, promotes long-term prevention, and lays the foundation for shared environmental policies in the Patagonia.
