Cigarette butts: an invisible pollutant that persists for years and threatens terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

Cigarette butt pollution is emerging as a global problem. These residues appear daily on streets, beaches, and public spaces.

However, their environmental impact is often underestimated, as their plastic composition makes their natural degradation difficult.

For this reason, they represent a persistent source of pollution. In this context, there is growing scientific interest in their environmental behavior.

A long-term study on degradation and persistence

A team led by Giuliano Bonanomi from the University of Naples Federico II analyzed this phenomenon. The research was published in the Environmental Pollution journal.

The study monitored cigarette butts for ten years in different environments. The aim was to study their decomposition and chemical changes.

The evolution of their toxicity was also evaluated. The results confirmed an incomplete degradation, and that even after a decade, the residues persist. Consequently, they transform into microplastics.

How cigarette butts degrade in different environments

The study analyzed urban surfaces, sandy soils, and grasslands. In the first few weeks, the butts lose part of their mass. This occurs due to the release of soluble compounds.

However, the process slows down over time. In nutrient-poor environments, the degradation is minimal.

Conversely, in fertile soils it is more active. Even so, the material does not completely disappear. It remains as plastic fragments in the soil.

Environmental hazards of cigarette butts

Cigarette butts contain cellulose acetate, a resistant plastic. This material fragments into persistent microfibers.

These particles pollute soils and water bodies. Additionally, they release toxic substances such as nicotine and heavy metals.

These compounds affect aquatic organisms and vegetation. On the other hand, a second phase of toxicity was detected, which occurs years later, as the internal fibers degrade.

Consequently, the contamination is prolonged over time. Furthermore, a reduction in microbial biodiversity was observed, altering the balance of terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, the environmental impact is profound and sustained.

Microplastics and invisible effects on ecosystems

Over time, the fibers form microscopic particles. These integrate into the soil as microplastics.

Their presence hinders environmental recovery. Moreover, they can enter food chains, amplifying the ecological risks.

The persistence of these residues exacerbates global pollution. Therefore, they are considered an emerging problem, whose impact transcends the visible and everyday.

Towards prevention and environmental management strategies

The study highlights the need for public policies. Understanding the cycle of these residues is fundamental, as it allows for the design of effective mitigation strategies.

Additionally, greater social awareness is required. The proper disposal of cigarette butts is key, as is the reduction of their consumption and the promotion of innovation in biodegradable materials.

In this way, the aim is to reduce their impact and thus, addressing this issue involves coordinated actions with an integral response that allows for the protection of ecosystems in the long term.
