Deforestation in Argentina Worsens and Alerts Grow Over Possible Changes to Environmental Law

The loss of native forests in Argentina has once again raised environmental alarms. Over the past year, thousands of hectares have been affected by deforestation and fires in various regions.

Additionally, environmental organizations warn that this situation could worsen. Consequently, they link the scenario to possible reforms in current legislation.

Therefore, the debate focuses on the balance between production and conservation. Likewise, there is growing concern about the future of ecosystems.

The loss of forests in Argentina is worsening, and there are growing alerts about possible changes in environmental law.

A sustained decline in forest area

Between 2018 and 2024, Argentina lost 1,416,000 hectares of forests. This figure, although lower than the period before 2007, shows a persistent trend.

Additionally, in 2025 there was a increase in deforestation. Consequently, more than 210,000 hectares were lost in northern provinces.

Likewise, the most affected areas were Chaco, Salta, Formosa, and Santiago del Estero. Therefore, these regions concentrate a large part of the environmental impact.

Fires and deforestation: an increasing pressure

The advance of deforestation continues to be the main cause of forest loss. Added to this are increasingly intense fires.

Additionally, in Patagonia, thousands of hectares were devastated by fire. Consequently, the degradation of Andean-Patagonian forests is worsening.

On the other hand, these processes affect biodiversity and ecosystem services. Thus, the regulation of climate and water is compromised.

Obstacles in the implementation of the regulations

The Forest Law, enacted in 2007, marked a turning point. However, its implementation has faced multiple difficulties.

Additionally, organizations report illegal deforestation and a lack of effective controls. Consequently, the regulations lose effectiveness in the territory.

Likewise, the lack of funding limits conservation projects. Therefore, the protection of key areas is weakened.

Key points of the Forest Law in Argentina

The Environmental Protection Law of Native Forests establishes a territorial zoning system. Firstly, it classifies forests into three categories according to their level of conservation.

Additionally, category I or red prohibits any type of intervention. Consequently, these areas must remain intact due to their high ecological value.

Likewise, category II or yellow allows for sustainable uses such as tourism or research. Therefore, it seeks to balance conservation and human activity.

On the other hand, category III or green allows for deforestation under certain conditions. Thus, the productive use of the territory is regulated.

Debate over a possible reform

The national government has announced the intention to modify the law. In this regard, one of the proposals aims to ease restrictions in protected areas.

Additionally, it is proposed to allow deforestation in areas currently classified as yellow. Consequently, the authorized area could be significantly expanded.

On the other hand, environmental organizations warn about the impact of these changes. Thus, they argue that they could weaken the current protection.

Finally, the debate continues in the judicial and political spheres. Therefore, its resolution will be key for the future of Argentine forests.
