Engineers at Alsym Energy, with one of its founders being Kripa Varanasi from MIT, have developed an innovative rechargeable battery that is non-flammable and non-toxic as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries.
Although the complete composition is a patent-pending secret, it is known that the electrodes use stable and abundant materials, such as manganese oxide and a metal oxide. The electrolyte is mainly water with non-toxic additives.
Advantages of the New Rechargeable Battery
- Safety and Sustainability: Alsym batteries are inherently safer and more sustainable than lithium-ion batteries. They do not require the same safety protections or cooling equipment and can be placed close to each other without the risk of fires or explosions.
- Compatibility with Current Factories: They can be manufactured in lithium-ion battery factories with minimal changes and at a significantly lower operating cost.
Decarbonization Potential
The batteries are being tested globally and have enormous potential to decarbonize industrial sectors that use fossil fuels, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
They are also useful for sectors such as mining, data centers, and household use.
