This weekend, large icebergs were sighted near the Perito Moreno Glacier, preventing the classic tourist navigation in the area.
These are ice block detachments from the north wall of the glacier that have been obstructing the passage of the fleet since Friday, leading to the cancellation of excursions.
This affected the traditional Moreno Spirit boat, operated by Southern Spirit, leaving from Puerto Moreno (at the foot of the walkways on the coastal promenade) along the Iceberg Channel and skirting the width of the north wall of the glacier.

The company apologized to the tourists and warned that those affected can cancel their contracted navigation.

However, no alternative dates have been defined yet, as they now await changes in weather conditions and for the wind to displace the icebergs in order to clear the boats’ departure.
The Perito Moreno Glacier will undergo a drastic retreat if it loses contact with the peninsula
The Perito Moreno Glacier, one of Argentina’s most emblematic natural wonders, is facing a worrying threat.
According to a report from the Glaciarium glaciological center, if current conditions persist, the glacier could disconnect from the Magallanes peninsula and enter a phase of irreversible retreat.
The report is based on data collected by the GPM Station, a meteorological station located on the southern bank of the Perito Moreno Glacier since 1995. These data show a constant increase in atmospheric temperature in the region over the past 28 years.
“It has been recording data for 28 years, showing atmospheric warming in the region,” the report indicates. It highlights that the average annual temperature has increased by 0.8°C in this period, and summers have experienced a significant rise in maximum temperatures.
