World Day for Laboratory Animals celebrated: Towards a cruelty-free science

Every April 24th, the World Day for Laboratory Animals is commemorated, a date that invites us to reflect on the use of animals in scientific research and to promote ethical and effective alternatives.

From V-Label Latam, the leading vegan certification label internationally, reaffirm their commitment to the development of cruelty-free products, ensuring that neither the inputs nor the final products have been tested on animals.

The reality behind the use of laboratory animals

Every year, over 192 million animals are used in scientific experiments globally. Among the most affected species are mice, rats, cats, rabbits, fish, non-human primates, and other mammals. These animals are subjected to different types of tests, including:

Acute toxicity: to measure the lethal effect of a substance.

Dermal and ocular irritation: to analyze damage to the skin and eyes.

Skin sensitization: to evaluate allergic reactions.

Chronic tests: to observe the long-term effects of chemicals or drugs.

These practices are currently being questioned for their lack of effectiveness: 92% of drugs that work in animals fail in human clinical trials, according to the FDA.

Although today there are more than 27 alternative methods approved by the OECD that allow replacing the use of animals in cosmetics and other industries testing (including human tissue models in the laboratory, organ-on-a-chip, and advanced computational simulations), there are still companies that continue to test on animals.

The role of V-Label in relation to animal experimentation

The V-Label certification ensures that both the ingredients and the final product have not been tested on animals. Through a rigorous evaluation process, brands obtain a reliable endorsement that allows them to clearly communicate their commitment to cruelty-free practices.

“On this day, we invite companies to certify their vegan products and align themselves with a more ethical and responsible stance, promoting their 100% cruelty-free offering,” says Ignacia Uribe, CEO of V-Label Latam.

In addition to inviting companies to act, V-Label also focuses on the daily decisions of consumers. “The invitation also extends to consumers, who can make a real change by choosing certified vegan products, understanding the commitment behind a more inclusive and respectful model towards all animals,” Uribe concludes.
