According to local media, complaints about the lion’s condition began more than 15 days before its death. However, authorities did not take action until the situation became public.

Profepa initiated an inspection at the zoo, confirming not only the lion’s death, but also critical conditions in other animals at the site.

It secured 119 wildlife specimens during the inspection conducted between April 29 and May 1.

Dirty cages, empty water troughs, and unhealthy enclosures were found, revealing a systematic neglect and a lack of basic care for wildlife.

The Culiacán zoo, which was previously considered a model for conservation and environmental education, was pointed out by workers and animal rights defenders as a place where animal welfare was “systematically neglected”.

Several employees reported that the animals lack adequate veterinary care and that the facilities do not meet minimum standards for their care.

Debates on zoos: the ethical issue and the state of animals

This case has reignited the debate on the ethics of zoos and the need to reform animal protection policies in Mexico.

Debate over zoos that are still operating.

Animal rights organizations have demanded the permanent closure of the zoo and the implementation of stricter measures to ensure the well-being of animals in captivity.

Profepa continues its investigations and promised to take legal action against those responsible for animal abuse at the Culiacán zoo. It is hoped that this case will set a precedent to strengthen animal welfare legislation and practices in the country.
