The population of giant pandas

In January 2024, it was estimated that there were around 1900 giant pandas in the wild in China. In captivity, it is estimated that there are more than 600 pandas worldwide.

The numbers represent a significant increase since the 1980s, when there were around 1100, according to information from the National Forestry Administration of the Asian country.

The increase is largely due to the “intense protection efforts” of this species carried out by the country, stated Zhang Yue, deputy director of the Wildlife Conservation Department of the state institution, as cited by the official Xinhua agency.
