A recent study revealed that Argentinians have an increasingly close bond with their pets. According to a survey by the KANTAR consulting firm in 2024, 75% of respondents consider their dog or cat as a child. Additionally, 8 out of 10 households in the country have at least one pet, a percentage that has remained stable since 2022.
The report highlights that pet ownership is more common in Greater Buenos Aires and the interior of the country, where 80% of households live with at least one pet. In the City of Buenos Aires, however, the percentage is lower (59%), although the number remains significant. Moreover, a striking fact emerges from the 2022 National Census by INDEC: in CABA, there are more dogs than children under 10 years old.
Dogs remain the favorites: 78% of respondents claimed to have at least one dog in their home, while cats reach 51%. However, dog ownership shows a slight 6% decrease between 2017 and 2024, while cats are gaining popularity, especially among women (57% of cat owners are women, compared to 44% of men).
Adoption continues to be the predominant way of acquiring pets for households: 64% of respondents stated they adopted their pet, while 28% received it as a gift. In contrast, pet purchases dropped from 11% in 2023 to 8% in 2024, although it remains more common in higher socioeconomic sectors and in CABA.

Pets and Quality of Life
Veterinarian Juan Enrique Romero highlights that pets improve people’s health and emotional well-being. Several studies have shown that pets are particularly beneficial for the elderly, even helping in cases of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, and also providing well-being to children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
New Habits and Demands
The increasing humanization of pets has led to changes in consumer habits and lifestyle:
- 39% of pet owners frequent “pet-friendly” cafes, and 80% believe that restaurants and museums should allow animals.
- During vacations, 59% choose pet-friendly accommodations, and 39% hire caretakers or pet boarding facilities.
- 66% share photos and videos of their pets on social media, and 35% follow pet-related influencers.
In this context, the debate on public policies ensuring animal welfare and regulating responsible ownership is growing. Projects have been promoted from the Buenos Aires legislature to eradicate abuse and promote harmonious coexistence between humans and animals. Meanwhile, for millions of Argentinians, their pets are no longer just companions: they are part of the family.

Why is it important to have pets at home?
Several studies have shown that having a pet is a good way to combat anxiety and depression, as their companionship helps increase the sense of security and protection. They also contribute to improving physical health by reducing stress and feelings of loneliness, positively impacting heart health.
Currently, pets are considered another member of family units, representing companionship, loyalty, responsibility, among other factors, sparking various discussions about this new way of integrating households.
