The Government of La Rioja launched ‘Leave a Trace’, an innovative campaign that seeks to promote responsible adoption of dogs and raise awareness about the proper care of pets. This initiative aims to sensitize the population about the importance of providing a home for abandoned dogs and educate about the responsibilities of owning a pet.
Under the motto “Leave a Trace, Adopt Responsibly”, the initiative focuses on the emotional and social benefits of living with a dog, while also emphasizing the need to consider the characteristics and needs of the animal before taking the step. This includes evaluating their temperament, energy level, and the expenses associated with their care.
The campaign was presented by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural World, and Environment, Noemí Manzanos, along with the Director General of Agriculture, Livestock, María Jesús Miñana. During the event, the minister highlighted that the well-being of animals depends on the treatment, dedication, and commitment of the people who decide to adopt.
**The situation in La Rioja**
In the region, an average of 500 abandoned animals is collected each year, of which approximately half find a home. In this regard, Manzanos stressed that the goal is to significantly increase the number of adopted animals since shelters are only temporary refuges and not a permanent home, which is what these pets need.
Since this summer, La Rioja has a new shelter in the municipality of Cañas, which works in collaboration with municipalities (except Logroño, which has its own shelter). To date, the Animal Shelter of La Rioja has cared for 144 dogs and managed 47 adoptions, while other dogs were reclaimed by their owners. Currently, it houses 54 dogs looking for a home.
**Responsible Adoption Process**
Individuals interested in adopting can request an appointment through the email [email protected]. The process includes a written commitment to ensure that the animal will receive proper care. Dogs are vaccinated, dewormed, and identified with a microchip upon adoption. Additionally, temporary adoptions are offered, or prior walks can be scheduled to get to know the dog before making a decision.
The campaign also emphasizes educating young people through brochures, advertisements, and audiovisual material. “Education in this area not only improves the welfare of animals but also helps create citizens committed to their care,” the minister noted.
‘Leave a Trace’ aims to inspire residents of La Rioja to adopt, reminding them that a pet is not a toy but a living being deserving of respect, dedication, and affection.
**Why is Adoption Important?**
Responsible adoption of animals, especially dogs and cats, is a fundamental act that has a positive impact on both the animal’s life and society for the following reasons:
1. **Saving lives and providing a second chance**: Many abandoned animals end up in shelters or on the streets, often in precarious conditions. Adopting means offering a home to an animal in need and giving them the possibility of a dignified life filled with love and care.
2. **Reducing abandonment and overpopulation**: Adoption helps reduce the number of animals in abandonment situations and combats animal overpopulation. Many shelters are overcrowded, and adopting helps free up space for other animals in need of care.
3. **Promoting responsible ownership**: Adoption also involves raising awareness about the commitment of having a pet. Unlike buying, adoption usually includes an evaluation process to ensure that the person is ready to provide the necessary care for the animal, thus promoting responsible ownership.
4. **Combating animal exploitation**: Adoption helps curb the demand for animals in the commercial market, where profit is often prioritized over the welfare of animals. Many breeders use inhumane practices to reproduce purebred pets, subjecting them to exploitation and mistreatment.
5. **Shelters are temporary, not homes**: Shelters provide protection and basic care, but they do not replace the love and stability of a home. Adopting means giving these animals a real family.
6. **Benefits for the adopter**: Adoption not only changes the life of the animal but also that of the adopter. Pets offer unconditional affection, reduce stress, improve mood, promote physical activity, and instill a sense of responsibility.
7. **Breaking prejudices about mixed-breed animals**: Mixed-breed dogs and cats are often less adopted compared to purebreds, but they are equally loving, loyal, and healthy. Adopting helps break these stigmas and value animals for their character rather than their appearance.
In conclusion, adopting is an act of empathy and responsibility that contributes to a fairer and more supportive world for animals. It’s not just about finding a pet but giving them a second chance and returning the love they are willing to offer.
