Reintroduction of Harpy Eagles on Barro Colorado Island Triggers Ecosystem Changes After 14 Months

For more than 100 years, Barro Colorado Island in Panama was a safe haven for monkeys and sloths that did not have to worry about aerial predators. However, the tranquility vanished with the release of two harpy eagles equipped with radio transmitters, turning the forest into a constant alert zone in just 14 months.

Reintroduction of Predators on Panamanian Island

This conservation biology experiment aimed to discover if a predator raised in captivity retains its hunting instinct and how prey react after generations without facing danger. The island offered the ideal conditions to study these natural dynamics.

Barro Colorado Island, a scientific reserve since the 1920s managed by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, was formed during the creation of the Panama Canal. For decades, its arboreal inhabitants lived without aerial threats. But the absence of a key predator left a missing piece in the ecosystem.

In 1999, the introduction of a young male harpy eagle in June, followed by a female in October, changed this dynamic. Both, raised in captivity and equipped with radio transmitters, came from conservation projects like The Peregrine Fund. Despite having no prior training, they quickly demonstrated their hunting skills.

The monitoring conducted by biologist Janeene M. Touchton and her team revealed that, over a period of 89 days for the male and 205 days for the female, they captured a total of 71 prey. The captures mostly included medium-sized mammals, especially sloths and various species of monkeys, marking a dramatic change in the behavior of the local fauna.

The data shows that between one-third and half of the hunting attempts were successful, achieving a prey every few days. The eagles maximized their opportunities during cloudy and rainy days, when the density of the foliage gave them a tactical advantage.

This finding is crucial for reintroduction programs, highlighting that eagles raised in captivity can quickly adapt their hunting skills in a suitable environment.

Impact on Monkey Behavior

The other side of the story is in the prey. A subsequent study revealed that the howler monkeys on the island developed new defensive behaviors in response to the eagles, such as increased vigilance and specific vocalizations to warn of aerial danger. These reactions persisted even after the eagles were removed.

In conclusion, the reintroduction of predators like harpy eagles not only impacts the prey population but also restores lost ecological interactions, a vital aspect for the conservation and recovery of vulnerable species, as highlighted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The study documenting these observations has been published in the journal Ornitología Neotropical, offering valuable lessons for future conservation initiatives in Latin America.
